How to Transition Your Dog to a New Food in 7 Days

Switching your dog's food too quickly can cause upset stomachs, vomiting, or diarrhea. Whether you're moving from a store brand to a premium formula like Petluxe, or just changing protein sources, a slow, gradual transition is the key to a happy pup and a settled gut.

Why slow transitions matter

Your dog's digestive system relies on a specific community of gut bacteria that has adapted to the food they've been eating. Switching abruptly disrupts that balance. A 7-day transition gives those bacteria time to adapt.

The 7-day transition plan

  • Days 1–2: 75% old food + 25% new food
  • Days 3–4: 50% old food + 50% new food
  • Days 5–6: 25% old food + 75% new food
  • Day 7: 100% new food

Signs the transition is going well

  • Firm, well-formed stools
  • Steady appetite
  • Normal energy levels
  • No excessive licking or scratching

Signs to slow down

If you notice loose stools, vomiting, or refusal to eat, hold at the current ratio for an extra 2–3 days before increasing the new food. For dogs with extra-sensitive stomachs, stretch the whole transition over 10–14 days.
